Snowdrop ‘Flore Pleno’

On Saturday I gave into the temptation to get some double snowdrops…

So, I present to you: Galanthus ‘Flore Pleno’

    • Hi,

I don’t have the heart to cut any blooms and have them in a vase quite yet… perhaps once I have more and then I’ll attempt more detailed photos to get a really good look at them!

    • Hi Donna,

      Thanks 🙂

Spring bulbs are always the best… I’m not sure why, but I think it’s the beautiful shades of purples, whites and cream that I love so much.
My Thomasinianus Crocus were open today and once again I’m smitten by their purple… it’s just so soft, romantic and utterly stunning.

    • Hi Pauline,

It has been rather sunny recently, and of course nice and mild! On Sunday the Ladybirds were out in force; so many around it was amazing!!

    • Hi Janet,

In general I do prefer simple blooms compared to doubles (Roses are the notable exceptions) but these little ones did tempt me and perhaps I’ll get some nice hybrids with my single snowdrops in the future.

    • Hi Carolyn,

Hahaha, I really hope I don’t end up collecting Snowdrops too! At the moment they’re on the same level as Crocii and Irises in that I enjoy them and stick to my favourites but feel no need to go out collecting lots of varieties…
Judging by my recent Hellebore obsession, I’m sincerely hoping Snowdrops don’t take over!

    • Hi Elaine,

Ah, well the Snowdrops weren’t down low so no scrambling around on the ground for me this time. Although I’m not adverse to getting down in the mud- on sunday I was down on my knees taking photos of Snowdrops at a local Priory with pretty Snowdrop carpets… Yes people did stare at me! 😀

    • Hi Jan,

I hope they will too! 😀 I’ll have to find a very special place for them to go where I can see them easily and get more photos in future.

    • Hi Julie,

Many of my plants travelled with me too to our new home! And even those which I left behind I have regretted ever since!
If I moved now it’d be impossible to move everything; I think I’d have to take weeks just digging things up and transporting them to any new house 🙂

    • Hi,

They’re certainly different to look at; and I do like the simplicity of the ‘nivalis’ snowdrops… Their simple, understated elegance is also very pretty. And I hear the doubles don’t tend to naturalise quite as readily or quickly. So I think it will be a long time yet before I have a nice clump of them.

    • Hi Sue,

Yes I can plant them now as we’re having rather mild temperatures of 50+F, sometimes nearly 60F at the moment; but I’m torn between having them in the ground but with less access for photos and having them in pots near the house but risk them dying if we have another hard winter of a couple of years ago.

    • Hi Janet,

I’ve always stuck to plain old Snowdrops, mainly because I’ve never been interested enough to become a snowdropophile! However I do like to have a lot of them and plant at least 100 every Autumn – sounds like a lot but actually only 10 groups of 10 isn’t very much.
Now I just need to decide where I’m going to plant these ones because I want them somewhere I can easily see them – and photograph- but also I don’t want them in pots near the house in case they don’t make it through a very cold winter. So I’m a little stuck at the moment deciding!!

Funny isn’t how we think of some plants as male and others female? Strange! Like people class cars or boats as women and so on. Weird 😀

  1. Glad to hear that you could not resist temptation Liz ~ you made a most wise and discerning purchase 🙂 Your photos really do highlight their exquisite markings.

    • Hi Pete,

Haha, I have no shame; I was in the mud crawling around taking photos at a local Snowdrop garden on Sunday… And yes people did look at me! 😀
No doubt I’ll do the same later in the year with the Bluebells too; and I’m looking forward to it.

    • Hi Cheryl,

      Thanks very much 🙂

I’m more than happy to stick to my basic ‘nivalis’ snowdrops instead. But I do think I’ll probably pick up the odd species here and there.

    • Hi Shirley,

Thanks very much… Still yet to find a place for it to go… lol. I’ll end up fluffing around until the blooms are dead and then forget I even planted them! grrr.
